Jim Barefoot was born and raised in North Carolina. He graduated from NCSU with a BS in Wood Science and Technology. After several years building dulcimers and banjos, Jim returned to NCSU and the School of Design for a Masters of Product Design.
After school, Jim won a scholarship to the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, which led to a position with Stendig developing the American Business Sofa series. Jim moved on to work at Brayton International for several years before opening his own Winston Salem studio in 1994.
