Product Disassembly

It’s a challenge to predict where durable furniture will end up after its long lifetime, but Allsteel is working to keep our furniture out of landfills. One way to encourage the future recycling of our products is to make disassembly diagrams publicly available. These diagrams include identification of the materials in each component part so future recyclers can turn old materials into new.

Product End of Life

ANEW - Allsteel has created an end-of-life referral program for our customers, using ANEW. ANEW is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that can provide a sustainable disposition solution for surplus contract office furniture. By using ANEW, our clients can extend their furniture’s useful life through repurposing, help local and national charitable organizations through donation, divert most materials from the landfill through recycling, and receive a tax deduction in the process.

Responsible Manufacturing

Allsteel and HNI are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions as a participant of the Science-Based Targets Initiative. We have pledged to reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2025* and reduce our Scope 3 emissions by 40% per ton of goods sold by 2035**. We have met our 2025 goal through the purchase of renewable electricity for our operations and committed to annually sourcing 100% renewable electricity for our global operations through 2030.

A majority of Allsteel’s products are made at our manufacturing facilities in Muscatine, IA; Wayland, NY; and Hickory, NC. In our facilities, we form, process, and finish many raw materials that make up our products, like steel, aluminum, particleboard, fabrics, and powder-coat paint. We focus on the efficient use of our raw materials and work to recycle our wastes. Many of our major raw materials are sourced and manufactured within the US.

Our lean manufacturing approach and belief in constructive discontent shows us there’s always a better way, and improvement never ends. We empower our members to constantly seek ways to improve processes and eliminate waste. This drives us to identify the most efficient ways to use materials and energy in production, and then find ways to recycle what can’t be used. In each of our facilities, we measure and manage our energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation, water use, and other aspects. Since 2012, we have reduced our electricity use per unit of production, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use by 30% in each category.

  • We’re proud of our past achievements and are actively working toward achieving our future goals:
  • Reduce our energy consumption by 10% from our 2017 baseline
  • Source 100% renewable electricity annually for our global operations through 2030
  • Reduce our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% per ton of goods sold by 2035**
  • Achieve zero landfill waste at two of our manufacturing operations
  • Institute a transparent process to evaluate the environmental and social responsibility performance of 85 percent of our tier one suppliers
