Hierarchy of Worker Considerations in the Workplace
Worker health is an important element for ensuring a productive and committed workforce. This Prevention Pyramid outlines the hierarchy of these considerations. Like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, lower level considerations must be satisfied before higher levels can be successfully implemented. Holistic well-being programs are the pinnacle and are representative of supporting healthy employees.
Well-Being
- Goal: Create a work environment and culture that promotes health in a comprehensive way and encourages employees to work in a way that aligns with their preferences.
- Holistic employee considerations include:
- Nutrition
- Psychological
- Financial
- Community
- Activity
- Environment
Basic Ergonomics
- Goal: Reduce risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and create comfortable environments that foster productivity.
- Provide adjustable furniture and environmental considerations so individuals can be healthy and productive while working.
Workplace Safety
- Goal: Prevent acute injuries, catastrophes, and fatalities and ensure fundamental accommodation for all workers.
- Enforceable by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
