WAYLAND, NEW YORK – April 1, 2017 – Boasting lightly scaled, clean, modern lines with a distinct and deliberate residential feel, Gunlocke’s new Calm modular lounge combines the best of comfort, style and convenience. This collection of lounge components blends effortlessly into any commercial environment, from offices to educational settings to hotels.

Calm is designer Erin Ruby’s first creation for Gunlocke. In designing this piece, Ruby turned to Italian furniture from the 1970s, 80s and 90s as touchpoints, focusing on volume and upholstery techniques from these eras as her primary points of research.

“I worked from two main inspirations – aesthetics and function,” Ruby says. “There is a gap in lounge offerings when it comes to providing modularity in public spaces, so my initial design morphed from a conventional one-, two- or three-seat lounge to a modular solution.”

Aesthetically, Ruby saw an opportunity to incorporate softer forms into the design not only to add comfort but also to make the lounge less formal, and more easygoing and approachable. She crafted strong square geometries on the lounge’s exterior, juxtaposing this element with loose, soft cushions and rounded edges on the seat to deliver a warm, inviting place to sit and relax.

“It’s something that invites you to sit. It bridges contract, hospitality and residential environments,” she says. “The idea evolved from a balance of the softer volume on the interior to the shell’s more structured form that allows for flexibility and ease of reconfigurability. It’s more relaxed than a traditional contract lounge.”

The 25 components in this line include one-, two- and three-seat lounges; benches; and coffee, laptop and side tables. Options include a choice of four arms styles: two-arm, left-arm, right-arm or armless; frames available in standard powder-coats or an upgrade to polished chrome or brushed stainless; and table surfaces available in: laminate, veneer, glass, or solid-surface, with an option to accept field-installed stone tops.

Thanks to its flexible modularity, Gunlocke’s Calm collection looks equally at home in private offices as well as expansive public spaces such as atriums, lobbies and cafés.

“Although it’s definitely something different for Gunlocke, Calm still falls into the company’s ethos of not bearing to any specific trend,” Ruby says. “It’s the timeless design that makes it uniquely Gunlocke.”
